Brompton Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Brompton Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our cleaning activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to preventing accidents, injuries and ill health, and to promoting safe working practices across all carpet and upholstery cleaning services.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to manage our operations in a way that eliminates or controls risks arising from our cleaning work. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. We will continually seek to improve our health and safety performance by monitoring our activities, learning from experience and updating our procedures when necessary.

Management will provide the leadership, resources and support needed to implement this policy, and will ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into planning, decision making and day to day operations.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management of Brompton Carpet Cleaners. Management will:

Ensure appropriate risk assessments are carried out for our services and locations. Provide safe equipment, products and work systems. Supply suitable personal protective equipment where required. Arrange information, instruction, supervision and training for employees. Review this policy regularly and update it when necessary.

Employees of Brompton Carpet Cleaners share responsibility for maintaining high standards of health and safety. All staff members must:

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Follow company procedures and safe systems of work at all times. Use personal protective equipment properly and report any defects. Immediately report hazards, near misses, incidents and accidents to management. Cooperate fully with any investigation, training or improvement measures.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We will identify hazards associated with carpet and upholstery cleaning, stain treatment and related activities and assess the risks to employees, clients and others. Risk assessments will cover issues such as chemical use, manual handling, slips and trips, use of electrical equipment, work in clients premises, vehicle loading and unloading and lone working where applicable.

Findings from risk assessments will be used to develop safe systems of work and method statements. These procedures will be communicated to all employees who must follow them at all times. Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and after any significant change in work practices, equipment or locations.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

Brompton Carpet Cleaners uses cleaning solutions that are appropriate for professional carpet and upholstery cleaning. All chemicals will be selected, stored, transported, used and disposed of in line with manufacturer instructions and relevant regulations.

Where required, assessments of substances hazardous to health will be carried out and control measures will be implemented to minimise exposure. Staff will be trained to understand hazard labels, dilution rates, safe handling, spill response and appropriate ventilation requirements. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection or masks will be provided where necessary and must be worn as instructed.

Equipment Safety and Maintenance

All machinery and equipment, including carpet cleaning machines, extraction units, vacuum cleaners and accessories, will be maintained in a safe and efficient condition. Equipment will be inspected regularly and any defects will be reported immediately so that repairs or replacements can be arranged.

Employees will receive training in the safe use of equipment, including correct set up, operation, cable management, isolation of power supplies and cleaning or maintenance tasks that are within their competence. No employee is permitted to use equipment for which they have not been adequately trained or authorised.

Manual Handling and Physical Safety

Many aspects of our work involve lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling equipment and materials. Brompton Carpet Cleaners will seek to reduce manual handling risks by using appropriate trolleys, handles and aids and by planning work to avoid unnecessary lifting.

Employees will be trained in safe manual handling techniques, including correct posture, team lifts where appropriate and recognition of loads that are too heavy or awkward to handle alone. Staff must not attempt to move items that could cause injury and should request assistance or use suitable aids.

Slips, Trips and Housekeeping

As a cleaning company, we recognise the importance of managing slip and trip risks, particularly when carpets are being cleaned and floors may be damp. Staff will use warning signs and barriers where appropriate to alert clients and visitors to wet areas, trailing hoses or cables and other temporary hazards.

Good housekeeping will be maintained by keeping work areas tidy, storing equipment safely and promptly removing waste or spillages. Hoses and cables will be routed to minimise trip risks and will never be left across stairs or narrow passageways without suitable controls.

Lone Working and Client Premises

Where employees work alone or in client premises, additional control measures may be required. Staff must follow company procedures for signing in and out, maintaining contact with the office where applicable and assessing any immediate risks on arrival at a site.

Employees must respect client property at all times, maintain professional conduct and immediately report any concerns about safety or security. Work will not proceed if serious health and safety concerns cannot be adequately controlled.

Training, Information and Supervision

All new employees will receive an induction that includes an overview of this Health and Safety policy, emergency procedures and relevant safe working practices. Ongoing training will be provided to ensure that staff remain competent in their roles and aware of any new risks or procedures.

Supervisors will monitor standards of work, provide guidance and conduct spot checks where necessary. Additional training or refresher sessions will be arranged if unsafe practices or gaps in knowledge are identified.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and work related health concerns must be reported to management as soon as possible. We will record and investigate these events to identify causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Employees will be informed of relevant emergency procedures, including fire safety, first aid arrangements and actions to take in the event of chemical spills or equipment failure. Staff must follow these procedures and cooperate fully in drills or emergency situations.

Monitoring, Review and Policy Communication

Brompton Carpet Cleaners will monitor compliance with this Health and Safety policy through inspections, audits and review of incident records. Where improvements are identified, we will update our procedures, training and resources accordingly.

This policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever significant changes occur in our operations or applicable legislation. The current version will be made available to employees and clients on request and will be communicated to all staff who must familiarise themselves with its contents and implement it in their daily work.

By working together and following the principles in this Health and Safety policy, Brompton Carpet Cleaners aims to provide professional cleaning services in a safe, responsible and sustainable manner.
